hot shot

http://www.slate.com/id/2224941/

A hot dog vendor was kicked from the curb outside New York City's Metropolitan Museum of Art last week for failure to pay his monthly rent—of $53,558. Pasang Sherpa was under contract to pay the Parks Department $362,201 a year for a stand on the south side of the Met's entrance and $280,500 for another on the north side. That's a lot of hot dogs. With rent astronomically high, how much do New York City hot dog vendors actually make?

It's hard to say. Neither the Parks Department nor the Health Department (which oversees food sales outside parks) requires vendors to report income. They don't bother calculating expected sales, either—in part because rent is set at auction (with vendors battling it out) rather than by the city. What we do know is that even though Sherpa, a rookie, got in over his head, vendors have long been willing to pay hundreds of thousands of dollars to push $2 dogs outside the Met. (The museum attracts 5 million visitors a year, and the hot dog stands are the only food outlets for blocks.) Last year's occupant paid $415,000 a year for the Met stands plus at least $25,000 for supplies and labor, and didn't go under—so we can assume he brought in significantly more than $440,000.

the guy downstairs my office selling egg sandwiches and coffee drives a ducati.  how much do those guys make?  i've read somewhere that hot dog vendors can take home 2-400 a day cash.  not a bad amt of money for a job that requires no real training or academia.  nyc food trucks really do promise the american dream.  tax free. and if the owners going to splurge, a ducati would be the way to do it.  next time i walk into a meatpacking club, i expect the breakfast sandwich guy to have the neighboring table.  the kuey teow guy @ newton in singapore is a millionaire.  drives a benz and sends his kids abroad for school. makes u really wonder don't it?  hot shot foodies.

on wednesday night.  i went to a kalagny and ascend event.  korean lawyers meet korean finance people.  asian professionals looking to network and hook up.  pranna is a good space.  the cellar room is nicely separated from the restaurant unfortunately indian food is not a good choice for a meat market.  open bar option would have saved me some money.  but it turned out to be a successful event regardless.  men and women in their mid to late 20s, probably worked too much to focus on social life correctly end up here, to meet others like them and their friends (moi).  dan played the role of host and lawyer.  i played the role of degenerate friend that worked pretty well.  and all it takes is a clean face and a friendly attitude for lawyers to make their move on you.  i had no choice but to give my number and email out a few times.  its not a problem.  it's just odd giving out your number to "ann taylor" rather than "bebe".  hot shot is not my thing.

never ending story - boo hwal is on repeat.  (so wasted didnt pick up my phone all night.  so wasted i think i said i was hungover.  i barely remember nrb with jeff.  did i go to HARU for lunch?)

"u were such a hot shot up there" - JF.  i went to look at an apt.  PHA. it was nice.  it smelled like indian.  i find outdoor space useless.  i have a balcony now that i never use.  and so this place was touted as a duplex.  a private roof that i'd probably only use sparingly and even less as global warming takes effect.  so of course im going to ask questions like $$ per square foot priced in with outdoor space.  how does outdoor space get charged common charges?  and just cuz i lived in another building that the builder has done doesn't mean im going out of my way to show off.  he didnt ask what i did for a living and i didnt tell him.  but all in all JF says i came off like a hot shot.

the apt was a quick look.  too hot to stay too long.  4E sounds like a better buy.  the price is standard, but the rental prices sound great.  dinner at tiapol was a far walk but good.  sangria was good.  cinnamon in the sangria makes all the difference.  squid ink squid?  it was a good talk.  consensus through conversation.  it was my moment at being socrates.  and so from tia pol we decided to head to dream hotel.  i dont plan to go to hot shot places.  but i donned in my white tshirt and jeans with my gym bag slung over my shoulder and sunglasses on my head, i make my way into the hotel by looking like a hotel guest.  of course i run into altman and his fiance.  "oh wow, how you been buddy.  i got engaged....u guys have met before"....and after that....i head to the bar only to see ...SUSAN!   what are you doing here.  at a work event.  nice.  lets get shots.  this is where i'll finally admit to being a hotshot.  "hey meet my coworker...he's ranked number 2 globally.  oh ok.  nice."  " what do you do?" " i trade oil." "futures?" "no, i trade physical tonnage"  "OH."  Yep. I'm a hot shot.

if i was a hot shot on thursday night.  then friday was just plain old HOT.  and after work. i ended up at locanda verde with a colleague trying to talk about how being a hot shot doesn't work.  and it seems we have come a long way.  we've flipped the page.  now is the time for commradery.  and the steak tar tar and locanda is pretty darn good.  tribeca women also love to hit on boys at the bar. "what kind of small egg is that? less cholesterol?"  and after that. we went out to bar six. mk. arang.  i want to go home! im drunk.  and its HOT.
