family dinner

family dinner

we're a very very practical family.  we have very stable members entrenched in predictability.  and then there is my mom and i, floating variables that require quite a big margin for error (kim is a wannabe but innately she sides towards the other side of the spectrum).  but since we've been the way we are for years, the acceptance from the family is quite amazing.  if u can't make an engagement, just postpone till next week.  if it's inconvenient even though we had already made plans...it's ok, just come home tomorrow.  there's no point to fly back and forth, just come back in 2 months.  birthday dinners are just dates...we can do it the following week.  it's a good thing cuz we're practical, but it also embodies a typical asian inability to communicate emotions like westerners do.  it's who we are, and i wouldn't trade us for anything else.  the grass is never greener on the other side.   and so after being back for a 10 days, we finally had family dinner.
as the floating variable, i float in and out and just show up for dinner and make conversation.  tell stories about what others would call a "grand" life.  while the others seem to talk about real family stuff.  al is basically part of the family talking to my dad about some internet stuff he needs to fix in his office.  kim and benny and lana attend real baby shower events.  and my dad and uncle have their weekly dinner dates.  they have real family stuff to do.  i just show up here and there.  i want to be real too dammnit!! (ok, without the real stuff to do) hahaha.
