..."we went from nobody's to somebody's"
somehow i ended up in 基隆 AGAIN. steve woke me up and we went to find larry. i was not feeling well and being that the last time i felt like this we sobered up by hanging out at the beach. somehow, the idea of the beach turned into the pool. and the pool turned into water slide. at that point, the weather wasn't even that hot anymore but we hailed a cab and got in anyways.
larry being larry. struck up a conversation with the cab driver whom decided to give us a better option than 公館。 what was supposed to be a 5 minute cab ride, turned into a 500 NT 30 min ride with a closed water park due to last weeks typhoon. as i slid into the 2nd wall of a hangover, even larry got annoyed at the cab driver's idea of a joyride. i'm understating my discomfort in the backseat but when we rolled up to the local pool all i saw were "kids". "larry, if this pool is all kids i'm going to kill you."
they laughed at me cuz they felt good. "not so ready to be a dad yet eh?". to me, kids mean pee pee pool. and then there's the screaming. and then there's the crying. and then there's just your general misconduct. and yet we still went in. dirty. disgusting. you have to check your shoes in at the locker room. the floors are covered with sand and nasty pool water. and tip toeing really just puts you in a worser mood. and yet we still climbed up the stairs to the one and ONLY real slide. it was a short line, yet it took 30 minutes before our turn. larry goes. i go. steve goes. just like that, the afternoon changed for the awesome. and people are attracted to awesome.
my first run, i tucked in my legs up, put my hands behind my head so only had my back surface area touch the slide and slid ridiculously out of control off the last turn, flying down into the pool. adrenaline kicked in. splash factor kicked in. LETS GO AGAIN. and so it began. larry and i kept talking about how would be the best method for most speed, most control. leg tuck, non leg tuck. hands on butt. hands above head. how much speed out of the first turn, second turn, final turn. after a few runs, and even being warned by the lifeguard to not come down head first on my backside (completely lost control), it was then that the lifeguard shift introduced us to "你們要玩快?“
legs straight. hands up. but you have to suspend your body. only 3 points touch the slide. heel of foot. and 2 shoulder blade points. arms extended above your head and lifted out of the water. maximum control. maximum speed going into the last turn. and that's when water sliding became a sport.
this technique proved perfect for me. we decidedly tucked our legs in for maximum splash. i garnered so much speed there i got air off the slide. as i went further and further into the pool, my splash factor went onto the deck. which created a fan base. kids.
"whoa....你們是怎麼玩的?“
and in addition to the 3 girls in front of us (14 years old) that tried to speak english to try and be our friends, there were about 10 boys waiting at the bottom to see our splash. we were rockstars of the water slide park. a bunch of 30+ men at a water park w kids and parents. rockstars indeed.
