"it's so cute that you love and miss your sister sooo much"...
esther said this to me last night, but the morning after i realize it's applicable to the one that said it. never thought of her as a sister, probably cuz the one i have is a handful already. but i was so excited to see her in HK and seeing her last night lived up to the anticipation. we're not the type of buddies to care about keeping in touch on a physical level (esp with the wonderful world of email and xanga) but esther's always looking for one of those heart to heart, introspective-reflection catch up sessions.......but i think we both know that in our current state of frenzied bar engendered life....its never going to happen...and just as we've slowly begun to realize this we have a night like last night that has due cause for a morning after epiphany of appreciation. i had such a good time last night. the lee and chin both thank you.
we had dinner with mr dunston and his 2 assistants. the bentley driving hongkie who's appreciation of chinese food is paired with 5 bottles of champagne because it brings out the natural flavors of classic cantonese dishes. he ordered a feast and lei garden produced gem after gem. highlights - the peking duck had a much more robust flavor than nyc chinatown brasserie (and i gave that a great duck review), they keep more fat with the skin and wrapped in a much thinner crepe. light and flavorful. the HUGE lobster chunks with egg white dish was silky and luscious. the last entree was the gold rice in silver broth.....lobster broth in a casserole pot, where they pour sizzling crusty rice into the soup...DELICIOUS, with the khyms in the wings i was half expecting them to bring out extra po ri cha for my noo ren ji. the coconut mango glutton rice ball was HEAVEN, i could have cried when i bit into that one, that is if i didn't think they cheated though by putting whipped cream in the center.
however there is an ASTERISK....the fish dish was overcooked.
i purposely left out the fact that esther's uncle, kenny, the younger half of forbes asia's 'hip hop ala bim bim bop' regime was also present at dinner because he truly deserves his own paragraph. "i've never met your typical whiskey guzzling korean male.....and it's effin' COOOL" will said. Due to a filtered female perspective of the khym males, they come with quite the hype of social dominance completely regardless of fiscal success and lets just say that the presence was felt from the first hello. uncle kenny, in his cream sweater and sneakers, looks not a day over 30, and the greying hair only adds to power persona. he was the centerpiece of the table, cracking the first joke (which happened to be -alex and will gay tandem- comment), cackling the first profanity, taking the first individual smoke break, and tinkering his niece's male friends' mental and moral fiber with a serious discussion on ethnic roots (which muddled my 'lei garden' middle entree reviews). however blatantly overprotective he was about esther, it didn't stop the communal clanking of the beverage glasses for us. he was the reason for the dessert beverage. johnny walker blue limited edition comes in this awesomely HUGE BOX and an even more awesome CLEAR glass decanter. oh it sipped so smooth, it sipped so sweet. i miss it already.
cheers to the khyms. pal ee mah shuh to uncle kenny and jdubs blue. salut to the assistants for making fun of sha tin. kudos to mr dunston (even though u were on the path of making fun of mom HAHAHAHA...we should have let you continue). thank you for a great meal and great company.
the night ended for the old fogeys, the night started for the korean-korean-chinese triumverate. we were in TST, so why trek to LKF when kimberly road provided a renovated bar scene with an insanely cute waitress. we got to work asap. but i had to take a stand. no beers, no drinks by the glass. no whiskey. no gin. yay for VODKA. they only had smirnoff. we took it. we drank it. almost all of it and put the bottle in esthers bag. will talked to the waitress...and she walked away mid sentence. OUCH. so we left. went to moms (the only person i know that has enough superstar power to wear sunglasses at 1am indoors) after party which was one big haze. will hit on moms back dancers. will used his hands to grab from the buffet table. then i came home and made some 'phone calls'.
so....coat-tailing the wake of stardom is one thing, but being stopped on the street for a korean gasoo is another. it happened twice yesterday. nodded, smiled, and kept walking. yes...it's my claim to faim (yes the french entendre).
off to macau today. peace out cub scouts.
u want pictures? look in the hk tabloids.
