"Wedding Cake Rock is just north of Marley Beach in Royal National Park, Sydney. For this reason it’s also known as the White Cliffs of Marley. You can’t drive directly to Wedding Cake Rock. The nearest access is via a 3km walk along the Coast Track from Bundeena. The one hour walk is a little challenging in parts but the views along the way are breathtaking. Wedding Cake Rock is simply sandstone too, but what makes it unique is a complete lack of iron particles in the sand that makes up the rock. No iron means no rust (literally) and no colour. Just white. "
what also makes it unique is that the coastal walk is closed for upgrades and still chock full of fresh footprints. the wedding cake cliff is also loosley fenced because recent geotechnical assessment of the formation's condition shows that the rock is "precariously balancing on the edge of the cliff and severely undercut. the entire rock formation could collapse anytime within a decade" - yet when we checked instagram the morning of our hike...fresh photos appeared...
australians take onus of their own actions. cliffs and no lifeguard beaches are everywhere as society and education has given the citizens an appreciation and respect of mother nature. enjoy it and respect it. your own stupidity is at your own risk. ergo no lawsuits for loosely barricaded cliffs...
and so even after a ranger told us the rock was closed. we snuck around the fence. with a group of students following us. only to find families and other groups of people making the hour trek down the coast to the cliff. SCARY AS HECK!
