i've never experienced any real racism. albeit i grew up in a heavily jewish populated community in long island new york. and by the time i was studying history and watching the news, race and color had become very politically sensitive post rodney king and OJ simpson and clarence thomas. the arrival of MTV had made youth wary of racial slurs so i've never really experienced racism...
until last weeks drives down to jervis bay. a 200km drive from sydney passing through less affluent rural communities where a black convertible mercedes slk really stands out. cars drove past me and stared at me on the highway to the point where staring and driving and looking back at me was firstly a safety hazard and secondly not very nice. lip reading suggested shouting profanities and flicking the bird at two asians staying in the lane, obeying the speed limit and maintaining adequate distance between cars in a 2 lane environment. it made me self conscious about my right hand driving, until i realized it was blatant racism. as enjoyable as the country drive was, passing by cows and sheep and farms...we couldn't get to the tourist destination quick enough. unfortunately, with chinese tourists everywhere....it didn't help the cause. i couldn't be happier to have such a heavy american accent.
JERVIS BAY was beautiful. i had never seen white sand before. sand so fine and so white it's like a creamer powder packet and its squeaky!
