west texas oil exploration....i raise the money...they do the drilling.

"what got you so into triathlons?" - larry is into finding ways to push his body to the max.  he's into tweaking variables to mentally overcome physical weakness and optimize maximum output.  he's competitive amongst his friends.  and looking over his shoulder, he sees a peer in myself who works out regularly, has the physique to handle a more vigorous exercise regime and suckers me into his fanatic obsession.  i do it for vanity.  he does it for the challenge.  it's a good balance...until i get obsessed...

with only a week of exercise under my belt.  i agreed to a 6am half ironman.  i kind of knew i'd be able to do it, i just wanted to see how i'd perform.  and as expected...the swim was no problem.  the bike portion posed some challenges getting up to 石碇。 but the fact that we became mini celebrities on the mountain was pretty cool.  "你們那麼厲害。。。youbike到這裡?".  came down via 新店 parked the bikes and ran to 公管。。。then up through the park...

whats not pictured here is me.  in a borrowed from larry red bike shirt that struggled to stay on.  desperately clinging on at the shoulders and barely holding itself over my belly during the run.  it kept the heat in, and made me sweat even more.  embarrassingly fat yet still impressively enduring through the day.  felt even better with a beer at the end.  not sore at all the next day.  =)

i love watching movies where the protagonist is training.  he loses in the beginning...and goes back to nature to find oneself and train organically.  filmed with inspirational songs with the grace of nfl films.

it's not like we see each other that much.  it's not even like we talk that much.  there was a stint where there was a lot of gtalk while i was at cedar and she was at DC's korean embassy office.  that's where the foundation was laid during a work day of pure boredom...to be supplanted with conversations of kpop...specifically YG....youtube sharing...and korean conversation.  this blossomed into more korean talk as i hit the yumi era...and she shared precarious information about roommates and colleagues and miserable lady bosses.  there'd be one handed countable visits to new york where NRB, delivery service, and guitar cemented our kindredness on the venn circles even with slight discrepancies.   ie i love the 90s rock ballad.  she loves midtempo pop.

Stephanie Chang this photo screams, "taken friday after thanksgiving"...
Alexander Chin or "2 years ago...i would have totally been on her side
Stephanie Chang meet my friend alex. he's korean. by choice.
Alexander Chin ‎"can steph get you a korean passport so u can then be 85% korean?"
Alexander Chin ‎"no wait. i'll just get my nose done. 90%."
Stephanie Chang ‎"your nose doesn't need surgery. it belongs in the surgeon's lookbook"

nonetheless....we seemed to move to korea around the same time.  but as fate would have it...circumstances led to not having this friendship as a buffer to the land of "we hate foreigners"...and it's had to take its course where just about one year removed from korea...the timing was perfect.  "come to taiwan NOW.  i got your freeze covered"  OK.

it was amazing.  the moment she arrived at my apt...we did more in one day...than people do in a full week of touristy-ism.  and so it went....小程牛肉麵/대만소고기국수...youbiked to 101/city hall/ sunyatsen memorial then went to get 東區粉圓/동구빙수 。biked to grandma's to see eric.  hit up some freeze and chilled out at a coffee shop and had some 땅콩넹면 before biking to 士林夜市/시린야시장...walked around and ate everything in site....닭튀김/멜론차/굴 오믈렛  and whatever else i can't remember...before biking back to 上引海鮮 for a pellegrino...haha. and then a trip to partyworld & 죽!!!  i dont know why she didn't sing...and why she threw up cuz i was the one drinking 2 bottles of macallan.

day one seemed like forever.  day two was spent hiking.  between youbiking and hiking...there was tons of guilt free eating.  continual snacking to try new foods...continual exploring to see new places.  never too full...never too hungry...always eating...always exercising.  as if one mountain wasn't enough...we ended up hiking a solid 5 hours to 拇指山。 and back.  and as if two mountains wasn't enough...we spent the night at 陽明山。。。which has some amazing spots that are open late everyday of the week...

everyday was aided with great weather.  and day three was no different.  we biked to 中正紀念堂。 swung by the presidential palace.  and then hit up the 홍대 of taiwan in 西門町。first trip on the mrt back home before hitting up the den at night...why go clubbing when u're already having fun.  lets just finish our drinks and GO EAT!  "if i knew taiwanese breakfast was this good, i would've woken up early everyday!!!"

im called the FGM for original reasons i forget.  but it seems to fit.  and i was in dire need of friends and family to keep my mind off things...and thanks for coming steph!  come back soon!!! but not until i go to korea.  it's time to shake off the bitterness...

a few days ago i got a call from sk...just asking how i was doing...it was a heartfelt call.  people care.  i know friends care.  and i try my best to show reciprocating gratitude cuz i do.  thanks for the call sush.  missing pics from the summer....
